This guide is for people who have never sculpted anything in 3D. Not "never used ZBrush" — never sculpted, period. If you've been wondering how to start 3D sculpting without buying software or downloading a 4 GB installer, this is the walkthrough.

Everything below uses Re:Form on the Free plan. Free means the full toolset — every brush, layers, masking, symmetry, remeshing, undo — with no watermark and no card required. One honest note before we start: Re:Form is in alpha (v0.6.4 as of this writing). It's stable enough to learn on, and new brushes and fixes land constantly, but you'll occasionally see rough edges. We'd rather tell you that up front.

What do you need to start 3D sculpting?

To start 3D sculpting you need a desktop computer with a reasonably modern graphics card, a current version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox (or Safari 26 on macOS), and a mouse. That's the whole list. Re:Form runs free in the browser on WebGPU with nothing to download or install, no card required, and the full toolset on the Free plan — currently in alpha.

Some details worth knowing before you open a tab:

  • Desktop only. Re:Form doesn't run on phones or tablets. Sculpting wants screen space and precise input anyway.
  • Chrome, Edge, and Firefox work out of the box. All three ship WebGPU today, and Safari 26 (macOS Tahoe) does too; the FAQ tracks current support.
  • A mouse is fine. A pen display gives the best feel, but plenty of people block out their first ten sculpts with a mouse. Don't wait on hardware.
  • Zero dollars. Every tool in this guide is on the Free plan. The paid tier changes limits and export formats, not capability.

That's genuinely it. No trial countdown. Open the app, sign in free, and start pushing a sphere around.

Step 1: Open Re:Form and learn to move

Open the app. Sign in free (no card needed), pick the Free plan, and create a new sculpt — you'll get a sphere in the viewport. Before you touch a single brush, spend two minutes just moving around it. Camera control is the actual first skill of 3D sculpting — everything else builds on it.

The controls:

  • Left-drag on the sphere sculpts (careful — it works immediately).
  • Right-drag orbits the camera around the model.
  • Middle-drag pans.
  • Scroll wheel zooms in and out.
  • Ctrl+Z undoes. Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes. You will use these hundreds of times, and that's normal.

Orbit all the way around the sphere. Zoom in until it fills the screen, then back out until it's small. Get to where your hand does this without thinking. Sculptors orbit constantly — a form that looks right from the front and wrong from the side is wrong, and the only way to catch that is to keep the camera moving.

Two more things to try while you're here. Left-drag across the sphere and watch the Draw brush raise a ridge along the surface. Then hold Shift and drag over it — that smooths with any brush active, no tool switching. Draw, smooth, undo: that little triangle of actions is most of sculpting.

Step 2: Block out the big shapes first

Here's the one piece of craft advice that separates people who learn 3D sculpting quickly from people who stall: get the big shapes right before you touch detail. Every experienced sculptor works in this order — primary forms (the overall silhouette and masses), then secondary forms (the medium bumps and planes), then detail (wrinkles, pores, texture). Beginners almost always invert it, zooming in to noodle on an eyelid while the skull under it is the wrong shape.

So for your whole first session, work big. Stay at the resolution the sphere starts at — don't subdivide yet. The mesh is deliberately too coarse to hold fine detail, and that's a feature: it physically prevents you from doing the wrong thing.

The brushes that matter at this stage live in the Build family:

  • Grab grips the surface under the cursor and drags it. This is your main blocking tool. Pull a snout out of the sphere. Drag the back of the skull out. Push in eye sockets. Big, confident moves.
  • Clay builds material up like pressing strips of clay onto the surface. Clay Ribbon is the same idea with a squared, ribbed build-up — fast for roughing in masses.
  • Inflate fattens forms outward. Good for cheeks, bellies, anything that needs volume.
  • Smooth (or just hold Shift) relaxes lumps back down when things get chaotic.

While you block, use the squint test: lean back and squint at your model until the details blur and only the silhouette remains. Does the shape still read as a head, a fish, a mushroom? If yes, keep going. If no, no amount of detail will save it — fix the silhouette first. Orbit while you squint. A sculpt has infinitely many silhouettes, and the good ones hold up from every angle.

Expect your first blocking pass to look bad. That's not you — that's the stage. Blocked-out sculpts look like lumpy potatoes right up until they suddenly don't.

Step 3: Turn on symmetry

Look for the Symmetry X toggle and switch it on. From then on, every stroke you make is mirrored across the X axis: sculpt the left cheek and the right cheek moves identically.

Beginners should leave symmetry on for basically everything, for two reasons.

First, almost every classic beginner subject is symmetric — heads, skulls, creatures, torsos. Sculpting both sides by hand and keeping them matched is a skill in itself, and it's not the skill you're trying to learn right now. Symmetry removes an entire category of error so you can focus on form.

Second, it doubles your speed for free. One stroke, two sides. When you're iterating on big shapes, that matters — you'll try more variations because each one costs half as much.

The time to turn symmetry off is when you deliberately want asymmetry: a head tilted mid-expression, a creature with one big claw, battle damage on one shoulder. That's a finishing decision, not a starting one. For your first sculpt, set it and forget it.

Step 4: Subdivide for detail, remesh when stretched

Once the big forms hold up from every angle — and honestly not before — you're allowed more resolution. This is the core loop of digital sculpting, and it's worth understanding rather than just clicking through.

Subdivide ↑ quadruples the triangle count of your mesh. More triangles means the surface can hold finer shapes: where the coarse mesh could only manage a vague brow ridge, the subdivided mesh can hold distinct brows, lids, and the crease between them. Work at the new level until you've used it up, then subdivide again. There's also a Subdivide ↓ to step back down to a coarser level when you realize a big form still needs fixing — moving between levels is normal, not a failure.

Remesh solves a different problem. When you make big moves with Grab, the triangles in the stretched region get pulled long and thin, like an over-stretched net, and brushes start behaving badly there. Remesh rebuilds clean, even topology over your current shape in one click — same form, fresh surface. The habit to build: blocked out something with heavy Grab moves? Remesh before you keep sculpting. Stretched topology fights you; even topology doesn't.

So the loop is: sculpt at the current resolution → subdivide when you need finer detail → remesh when the surface gets stretched → repeat.

About limits, plainly: the Free plan runs up to roughly 12.5 million triangles, which is enough resolution for wrinkles, skin texture, and fine surface work — far more than any first sculpt needs. If you do hit the ceiling, the only thing that stops is further subdivision. Every brush, every layer, every tool keeps working on the mesh you have. Nothing locks, nothing watermarks. (Pro raises the budget to 50 million, but you will not need that this month.)

One engine note, because it affects how sculpting feels: the mesh lives on your GPU, and the whole point of the engine is that strokes at millions of triangles feel like strokes at thousands. You shouldn't feel the app get heavier as the count climbs.

Step 5: Use layers and masking so mistakes are cheap

Fear ruins more first sculpts than lack of skill. When every stroke feels permanent, you sculpt timidly, and timid sculpts look mushy. Re:Form gives you three tools that make mistakes cheap — use all of them.

Undo, constantly. Ctrl+Z is not an admission of failure; it's the fastest iteration tool you have. Try a bold stroke. Wrong? Undo, try a different one. Professionals undo more than beginners do, not less.

Sculpt layers. Open the Layers panel. Each layer is its own mesh you can move and sculpt separately — a new layer even starts as a fresh sphere, which is how you add separate parts like eyes or horns without carving them from the main form. The workflow that matters for beginners: when you want to try something risky — a different nose, an experimental crest — do it on a duplicate. Duplicate the active layer, experiment freely, and keep whichever version wins. You can reorder layers up and down the stack, Merge down to combine a layer with the one below it, or Merge all to flatten everything into one mesh (do that before remeshing the whole model as one solid). There's also a Mirror action — duplicate an eye layer, mirror it across X, and you've placed the second eye in two clicks.

Masking. The Mask brush paints protection onto the surface: masked areas resist sculpting entirely. Finished a mouth you're proud of, but need to rough up the chin right next to it? Mask the mouth, then work carelessly around it. You can invert the mask (protect what was free, free what was protected) or clear it in one click. Masking is how you stop one good hour of work from being smeared by the next.

Between undo, layers, and masking, there is no stroke you can't walk back. Sculpt accordingly — boldly.

Step 6: Save and export

Re:Form autosaves to your browser as you work, so a closed tab isn't a catastrophe. But make a habit of real saves too: Save .clay writes a file to your machine that snapshots everything — the mesh, all your layers, the lot. Open it later and you're exactly where you left off.

Worth knowing: your sculpt saves to your own computer. The model lives on your GPU while you work, and saving writes it straight to your disk. Your half-finished lumpy potato is between you and your hard drive.

When you've got something you want to use elsewhere, export it. The Free plan exports OBJ, which nearly every 3D tool on earth can open — Blender, game engines, slicers. What to sculpt first

Pick one of these. They're classics because each one teaches the fundamentals without hiding them.

  • Sphere to head. The canonical first sculpt. Eye sockets in, brow out, nose and jaw dragged from the mass. It teaches primary forms and symmetry, and your tenth head will embarrass your first — which is the point.
  • A simple creature. A blob with legs, a fat little dragon, a grumpy slug. Creatures forgive anatomy errors that human faces punish, so you can practice form boldly without an inner critic citing reference photos.
  • A mushroom house. Cap, stem, a door, a crooked chimney. Great for practicing Grab, Clay buildup, and hard-ish shapes — and it looks charming even when it's rough.
  • A skull study. One step harder. Sculpting a skull teaches you what's under every face you'll ever sculpt, and it's the single highest-value study in figurative work.

One subject, one sitting, done is better than perfect. Then do another.

FAQ

How long does it take to learn 3D sculpting?

Expect basic competence — blocking a readable head or creature — after 10 to 20 hours of practice. Your first session in Re:Form produces something recognizable within an hour; producing something good takes weeks of short, regular sessions. Daily 30-minute sculpts beat weekend marathons. Sculpting skill is mostly form-reading, which transfers from drawing and observation, so artists from other disciplines ramp faster.

Do I need a drawing tablet to sculpt?

No. A mouse works fine for learning — blocking, symmetry, layers, and masking in Re:Form all work without pressure sensitivity, and many people finish their first sculpts entirely with a mouse. A pen display gives the best feel once you're doing longer sessions and finer surface work. Start with what you have; upgrade when your hands, not the internet, tell you to.

Is a browser sculpting app good enough to learn on?
