Re:Form 0.8.2 Alpha is mostly about symmetry: until now it mirrored across X only, and now it mirrors across all three axes, in any combination, through every tool that knows about symmetry. The share viewer from 0.8.1 was rebuilt so a shared sculpt looks and turns the way it does in the app, and a batch of reported bugs got fixed. Re:Form is still alpha, and it is our tool, so what is still wrong is listed at the end.

What version is Re:Form on now?

Re:Form is on v0.8.2 Alpha as of September 25, 2026. It adds Symmetry Y and Z alongside X, in any combination, for every brush, the Clip and Mask shapes, the gizmo, Remesh, Extract, Panel Loops and the Mirror layer. It also rebuilds the share viewer to match the app, adds a Keep sets switch to Remesh and a cone primitive, and fixes about a dozen bugs.

Symmetry on X, Y and Z

Before 0.8.2, Re:Form only had Symmetry X, which mirrors left and right. Now there are three toggles in the Options section. The world is Z-up, so:

Toggle Mirrors Typical use
Symmetry X Left ↔ right Heads, figures, anything bilateral
Symmetry Y Front ↔ back Vases, bottles, props that match front and back
Symmetry Z Top ↔ bottom Gems, spindles, double-ended shapes

Turn on any combination. With all three on, one stroke lands in all eight octants at once. That makes quick work of an ornament, a die, a crystal or a hard-surface part that repeats on every side.

The Symmetry chip in the toolbar now lights up when any axis is on and names the active ones (for example, "Symmetry XZ"). Left-clicking it still toggles X as before. Right-clicking it opens the X / Y / Z toggles. The cursor shows a dot and a faint ring at every mirrored position, so you can see where a stroke will land before you press. The axes are saved with the project's brush settings, and older projects open with X alone, as they were saved.

Mirrored results are exact

The mirrored strokes are computed from the same positions as the main stroke, so the result is the exact reflection, not an approximation that drifts over time. The test for this release makes one Draw stroke under X, Y, Z, X+Z and X+Y+Z. It then checks every moved vertex against its reflection in each active mirror, to within 0.00001. It also checks Grab, Smooth and Paint the same way.

One detail that matters for Smooth and Relax: the starting sphere's quad diagonals now mirror across every plane, not just X. Before, a smooth stroke under Y or Z symmetry would have drifted slightly because the triangles on either side of the plane were split differently. Now both sides are split the same way.

It works everywhere, not just the brushes

Symmetry X already worked with most tools. In 0.8.2, every tool that supported X also supports Y and Z:

  • Clip and Mask shapes. Clip Line, Rect, Circle and Curve, and Mask Rect, Circle and Lasso, now draw one dashed outline per mirror and cut or mask through all of them. Only the shape you drew gets the red shading. Its mirrored copies are outlines, so the shaded side on screen is always your own.
  • The gizmo. A masked move is mirrored across every active plane, with a smooth blend where each plane meets the model. If the model has a matching layer on the other side of the plane, the gizmo finds it for every mirror and moves it too.
  • Remesh. A remesh with symmetry on comes out exactly symmetric across every active plane, so every vertex has an exact twin on the other side. There's more on this below.
  • Extract and Panel Loops. The piece or panels they build come out symmetric across every active plane, and the status line names the axes it mirrored across.
  • Mirror layer. It now flips the active layer across whichever axes are on, or across X if none are, so the button always does something.

Remesh without the seam

A remesh with Symmetry X used to leave a visible strip down the middle of the model. The mesh around the center line came out as a column of slivers and kite-shaped faces, and a symmetric stroke then beaded along it. The cause was that the remesh grid wasn't lined up with the symmetry plane, so the plane cut through the grid at an arbitrary depth.

Now the grid is lined up so each symmetry plane runs through the middle of a column of voxels, and vertices very close to the plane are snapped onto it. On a symmetric test shape, the center strip went from 17.8° away from square faces, with 4,900 broken quad pairs, to 1.5° with none. The rest of that mesh averages 5.0°, so the center strip is now the neatest part of it. If you want the longer version of why remeshing works this way, our retopology vs remeshing explainer covers it.

Keep sets is a new switch in the Remesh panel, on by default. Mesh sets used to be lost when you remeshed. Now each new vertex takes the set of the nearest spot on the original surface, so your groups survive the remesh. The set count updates to match, and undoing a remesh brings the sets back with the mesh. If mesh sets are new to you, our guide to polygroups and mesh sets explains what they're for.

The share viewer, rebuilt

Share-by-link arrived in the 0.8.1 release, and people who opened a shared link said the viewer felt and looked different from the app. In 0.8.2, the viewer uses the app's own camera controls and shading.

  • It turns like the app. It uses the app's orbit: right or left drag to turn, middle drag (or Shift + left) to pan, and the wheel to zoom, at the app's speeds. On a phone, drag with one finger to turn and use two fingers to pinch and pan. Every share opens on the Front view, and Reset, F or a double-click returns there.
  • It looks like the app. Matcap, Lit and Unlit use the same shading code as the studio. Before, the viewer's 3D library added its own lighting and color processing, so no share matched what you saw in Re:Form. A share also opens in the matcap it was made with, because the matcap now travels inside the shared file.
  • More ways to look. A Material picker (the share's own matcap first, then the app's sixteen presets), Wire, which now shows quads rather than every triangle, Spin for a turntable, Reset, and four backgrounds. On a narrow screen, each group of buttons gets its own row.
  • It opens in every browser. Shared links failed to load in Firefox because the storage server was blocking the download. Shares now load from reformsculpt.com itself, so the link works wherever the viewer runs. Link previews in chat apps also point to an image on the site, which link previewers handle more reliably.

The Re:Form mark sits top left, with the project's name and triangle count under it. In the app, the My shares and Share windows got wider so dates no longer wrap one character per line. Their thumbnails are now framed on the sculpt instead of the whole viewport.

Other additions

  • A cone primitive, on the start screen, in File ▸ New sculpt and in the New layer dialog. It's a closed shape (10,112 triangles at the base density) with no open edges.
  • A Wire chip in the top toolbar, next to Silhouette. It does the same thing as View ▸ Wireframe, so the chip and the menu always agree.
  • An adjust-alpha window. Right-click the alpha preview in the Brush panel to open a 512-pixel live preview with Contrast, Blur, Sharpness, Invert and Reset. It edits the same settings as the panel, so changing one changes the other. The Brush panel's own rows under the alpha thumbnail are the main controls now, with a new Reset adjustments button. (0.8.1 had a second, older adjustment path, and it's gone.)
  • More turntable options. The turntable render gains Anti-aliasing, Revolution length (2 to 10 seconds) and Revolutions (1 to 10), so five revolutions at five seconds each makes a 25-second video.
  • Ten aspect ratios in both the render and timelapse dialogs, from 21:9 to 9:16. The timelapse dialog used to have three.
  • The Refs button in the toolbar opens the full Reference panel, laid out wide. Click a view chip that has no image yet to pick an image for it, which replaces the separate Load image button.
  • New projects start on red wax. Every new project starts with the red wax matcap instead of inheriting the last project's. Projects you open keep the matcap they were saved with.
  • Bigger brush picker tiles (84 pixels, up from 70), so names like "Group Mask" no longer get cut off.

Fixes

  • The brush is the same size in Ortho as in Perspective. Ortho mode is really a narrow-angle lens pulled far back, and the brush size was calculated from that narrow lens. The same slider setting gave a brush about 4.7 times smaller the moment you switched to Ortho. The brush size and everything that depends on it (dab spacing, spray, jitter and the brush ring) now come out the same in both views.
  • The gizmo's scale handles line up with the object. After a rotation, the scale cubes pointed along the world axes while the arrows and rings followed the object. Scaling now happens along the gizmo's own axes, in Local or World space.
  • Reference planes fade out as they turn edge-on. A Front reference no longer shows up as a flat slab in the Top view.
  • Clear mask and Invert mask redraw right away, instead of waiting for you to move the view.
  • Inactive layers no longer flicker through the active one. Where two layers share a surface, such as a new sphere layer on a sphere, the inactive one used to show through as speckle. It now draws a tiny distance behind, so the active layer always wins, in the viewport and in every timelapse frame.
  • Slider knobs are circles again. The 0.8.1 change to square corners had squared them off too.

Is Re:Form 0.8.2 stable enough for real work?

Re:Form 0.8.2 is still alpha software. For this release, all 56 automated tests passed, performance was unchanged, and the save, open and undo checks came back clean. Features still change quickly and known issues remain, so keep saving projects and exporting OBJ files at milestones. Browser autosave and projects saved with your account protect the rest.

Every tool, symmetry on all three axes included, is on the Free plan, up to about 12.5 million triangles. Pro plans raise the triangle budget and add STL, GLB and FBX export and a commercial license.

What is still rough

  • A mirrored clip keeps only what every copy keeps. With symmetry on, a clip removes whatever the drawn shape or any of its mirrors would remove. So a Clip Line drawn to remove the big side of the model can remove everything once it's mirrored. Re:Form refuses that cut and says the clip would remove the whole layer. Removing the small side works, and its mirror removes the opposite side. Y and Z made this much easier to run into, because a horizontal line is its own mirror across X. We haven't yet decided how it should behave.
  • A Clip Rect drawn away from a symmetry plane can still leave small cracks on a dense mesh. This affects Y and Z the same way it affects X.
  • Clip shapes do nothing useful above three million vertices, and ambient occlusion is capped at eight million triangles, as in 0.8.1.
  • Sharing still has no per-plan limit.

FAQ

How do I turn on Symmetry Y or Z in Re:Form?

In the Options section, next to the Symmetry X toggle, there are two new toggles for Y and Z. You can also right-click the Symmetry chip in the top toolbar to get the same three toggles. A left-click on the chip still toggles X. Any combination works, and with all three on, one stroke is mirrored into all eight octants.

Do older Re:Form projects open in 0.8.2?

Yes. Projects saved before 0.8.2 open normally, with Symmetry X set the way it was saved and Y and Z off. Shares made before this release still open in the rebuilt viewer, but in the viewer's neutral matcap rather than the one they were sculpted with, since older shares don't include the matcap.

Does the rebuilt share viewer need an account?

No. Anyone with a share link can open it in a browser and turn, zoom, change the material and shading, show the wireframe or spin it, without signing in or installing anything, including on a phone. You need to be signed in to Re:Form only to publish a share or to manage your links under File ▸ My shares.
