Re:Form 0.8.3 Alpha is the release before the first tester round. The headline is that Subdivide ↓ no longer throws your detail away: step down, change the big forms, step back up, and every finer level comes back intact. Around it sit Clip Rect and Clip Circle that finally cut through a dense mesh, a share limit for Free accounts, a long list of fixes from a top-to-bottom audit of the app, a tidier right panel, two new themes, and a small lighting correction that leaves Lit renders looking the way they did.
What version is Re:Form on now?
Re:Form is on v0.8.3 Alpha as of September 26, 2026. It adds detail-keeping subdivision levels, Clip Rect and Clip Circle cuts at any mesh size, a five-share limit on the Free plan (unlimited on Pro), 27 bug fixes across undo, layers, the gizmo, brushes, imports and the cloud, Symmetry and Mesh Sets sections of their own in the right panel, the Lemonade Lake and Mint themes, and a lighting fix that keeps Lit renders at their previous brightness.
To update, reload the page. There is nothing to install, and your browser autosave and saved projects carry over. If you haven't tried it yet, open the studio in your browser. The Free plan needs only an account.
Subdivision levels keep their detail
Until now, Subdivide ↓ was a plain step back: it dropped the finer level and its detail with it. In 0.8.3 the finer level is kept. Step down to work on the big forms, move a jaw, pose a limb, pull a silhouette, then press Subdivide ↑ and the fine work comes back on top of the new forms.
The detail is stored relative to the surface, not in world space, so a region you bend or turn at a low level carries its pores and creases with it instead of leaving them pointing the old way. Paint and masks come along too, and a broad colour laid down at a low level shows through at the higher levels without wiping the fine paint.
A few things worth knowing:
- The kept levels live in your computer's memory, never on the graphics card, so brush speed and the triangle ceiling are exactly what they were. The Topology section shows how much they take under Stored levels, and Delete higher levels frees it when you are done with them.
- The Level readout shows where you are on the ladder, for example "1 / 3", whenever kept levels sit above you.
- Remesh, Weld, a Clip cut, merging and splitting layers change the mesh's topology, and kept levels cannot survive that, so they ask first.
- Saved projects and autosaves carry every kept level, so you can close the app at level 1 with three levels above and pick up where you were. Older project files still open.
- Level switches are not undo steps. A stroke can be undone on the level it was made on, until you switch.
On the test machine a step at 786,000 triangles takes under a second down and about 1.2 seconds up; at 3.1 million triangles it is about 1.5 seconds each way.
A share limit for Free accounts
Share by link now has a limit on the Free plan: five shares at a time. Deleting a share in My shares frees a slot, and Pro accounts have no limit. The Share dialog shows "3 of 5 free shares used" while you have room, and when you are at the limit it says so and offers My shares and Upgrade instead of failing part way through an upload.
The limit is enforced on the server, not just in the app, and a share that never finished uploading (the browser closed mid-way, say) now shows in My shares as "Upload incomplete" with a Delete button so it does not sit there holding a slot.
Lit renders and their brightness
An audit of the lighting maths found that the image-based diffuse light in Lit mode was several times dimmer than it should have been relative to the reflections and the key light. The maths is now right. Because the studio look had been tuned against the dim version, the default environment strength was scaled down to match, so a Lit render today looks the same as it did last week. If you liked the fill brighter, the Environment slider in the lighting section goes up from there.
Clip Rect and Clip Circle cut at any size
Since 0.8.2, a Clip Rect or Clip Circle on a dense sculpt looked like it only clipped near the camera: above three million vertices the real cut was skipped and the mesh was pressed flat instead, which removes nothing. In 0.8.3 the real cut runs on layers of any size the app can hold. Draw the shape, and everything outside it is gone with a capped, closed surface where the cut went through.
A second problem was hiding behind the first. Holding Ctrl while drawing a closed shape makes a pocket instead of a cut, pressing the inside of the shape down to a flat floor. On some shapes the pocket floor sank far too deep because the side test in the graphics shader picked the wrong side for points diagonally outside a corner. That test was rewritten, and a pocket now sits where you drew it, at every size we tried.
A cut is a real topology change on the whole layer, so it takes a moment on a big mesh. Measured on the test machine, with symmetry on:
| Triangles | Clip Rect cut | Clip Circle cut | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.1 million | 6.6 s | 8.9 s | under 1 s |
| 12.6 million | 5.6 s | 12.3 s | under 1 s |
The app shows a Clipping card while it works, and Ctrl+Z brings the whole mesh back in one step.
Symmetry and Mesh Sets in their own sections
The right panel is a little tidier. The three symmetry switches (X, Y, Z) now live in a Symmetry section just above Topology instead of among the Options chips, and Mesh Sets, with the Show switch, the angle slider and the rest of their settings, have a Mesh Sets section of their own after Topology. The brush picker's "Groups" family is called Mesh Sets too, to match.
Smaller changes
- Copying a share link says so. The Copy button in the Share dialog reads "Link copied" for a moment after you press it.
- The Project brush asks for its image. Picking Project with no image loaded opens the image picker straight away, with a hint if you dismiss it.
- Two new themes. Lemonade Lake, a lime-green chrome under a lemon-yellow accent, and Mint, a slate blue-teal chrome under a pale mint-green accent. Both are in Preferences under Theme, in dark and light.
- My shares matches the other dialogs. It has the same title, note and Close button as every other dialog in the app.
- Previews sit on the viewport's grey. Share previews, link cards and project thumbnails are drawn over the same neutral grey as the viewport instead of black.
Fixes
This release also ships 27 fixes from a full audit of the app. In plain terms:
Losing work
- Undoing a layer operation (merge, split, delete, duplicate, mirror) no longer wipes the rest of your undo history.
- A Clip gesture that cuts nothing, an object-mode click with a mask painted, and Grow or Clear with nothing masked no longer leave an empty undo step that swallowed your next Ctrl+Z.
- Opening a single-layer project over a multi-layer one now replaces the whole scene instead of loading into the old active layer and keeping the other layers on screen.
- Typing in the Share title or the Save name field no longer fires sculpt hotkeys or Ctrl+Z behind the dialog.
- A failed remesh, autosave restore, autosave delete, Invert mask or OBJ import now drops the input shield and tells you what happened instead of leaving the app frozen.
Layers, gizmo and groups
- The eye on the active layer now hides it. Share, Merge and Merge down already treated it as hidden; the viewport agrees.
- Merge all and Merge down place a rotated or scaled layer where you saw it, about its own pivot.
- Merge, Delete masked and Split masked keep the layer's Mesh Sets.
- Group Mask and Group Hide no longer pick a hidden group sitting in front of the one you can see.
- With symmetry on, the mirrored partner layer follows every gizmo drag of a session, not only the first.
- In the combined gizmo mode, a drag on empty space no longer scales the object.
- Undoing a masked move brings the gizmo back with the vertices.
- Weld now checks that it can run and that it has something to merge before asking to remove subdivision levels, and steps the levels down and back up without losing them.
Brushes and rendering
- Pinch and Crease mirror across the right line on strokes that run diagonal to a symmetry plane.
- Noise is symmetric across every active axis, not only X.
- Clay Strips no longer builds without bound on Accumulate.
- Flipping normals on a very dense mesh no longer makes parts of it vanish under backface culling, and Ctrl+Z after a flip works on the largest meshes.
- Running out of graphics memory during a subdivide keeps your Mesh Sets, and a Smooth, Blur, Smear or paint stroke that cannot get memory says so instead of going dead for the rest of the session.
- The guide square in Capture from viewport now sits exactly on the area that gets captured.
- The remesh message and the Panel Loops status name the symmetry axes that were actually on.
- The Level readout counts on a quad ladder after a remesh.
Imports and files
- A damaged .hdr background is refused with a message instead of freezing the tab.
- A GLB or FBX part with a mirrored transform imports facing outward.
- A symmetric remesh no longer produces duplicate faces along the symmetry plane.
Account and cloud
- Saved-project limits per plan are enforced on the server as well as in the app.
- The Terms version you accept is decided by the server.
- Deleting a share removes its files before its record, so nothing is left behind.
- The contact form answers a bad request cleanly.
- A repeated billing event from the payment provider is ignored instead of re-applied.
Is Re:Form 0.8.3 stable enough for real work?
Re:Form 0.8.3 is still alpha software. For this release, all 73 automated tests passed, including new ones for every fix above, a full round trip of the detail-keeping levels and a Clip Rect and Clip Circle cut and pocket under symmetry, and brush speed was measured unchanged. Features still change quickly and a project that matters should be saved as a .clay file as well as in the cloud.
Every tool is on the Free plan, up to about 12.5 million triangles and five shares at a time. Pro plans raise the triangle budget, remove the share limit and add STL, GLB and FBX export and a commercial licence.
What is still rough
- Quad ladders after a remesh cannot step down. The Level readout now counts them, but Subdivide ↓ on a quad ladder still says it is at the base. Loop ladders (the default) keep their levels.
- Kept levels take memory. A kept 12.5-million-triangle level is roughly 240 MB in memory and in the saved file. Delete higher levels when you no longer need them, and a project with very large kept levels may exceed the cloud save limit; the app tells you which levels to drop.
- A mirrored clip keeps only what every copy keeps, as in 0.8.2.
FAQ
Does stepping down a level still lose my detail in Re:Form?
No. Since 0.8.3, Subdivide ↓ keeps the finer level and Subdivide ↑ brings it back with its detail, following whatever you changed at the lower level. The Stored levels readout in the Topology section shows how much memory the kept levels use.
Does Clip Rect work on a dense mesh now?
Yes. In 0.8.3 a Clip Rect or Clip Circle cuts the layer for real at any size the app can hold, up to its working limit. A cut on a mesh of several million triangles takes a few seconds; hold Ctrl while drawing to make a pocket instead, which is near instant.
How many shares can I make on the Free plan?
Five at a time. Delete one in My shares to make room for another, or go Pro for unlimited shares. Shares you made before this release still count and still work.
Do older Re:Form projects open in 0.8.3?
Yes. Projects saved before 0.8.3 open normally. Projects saved in 0.8.3 with kept levels need 0.8.3 or later to bring those levels back.
