The head is the sculpt everyone tries first and the one most people abandon halfway. Not because it's technically hard — it's a sphere you push around — but because a face is the one shape every human on earth can read errors in instantly. This walkthrough is the order of operations that gets you past that. It assumes you can already orbit a camera and lay a stroke; if you can't yet, start with the first-sculpt walkthrough and come back. Disclosure up front: Re:Form is our browser sculpting tool and it supplies the examples, but the proportions and the blocking order below are the same in ZBrush, Blender, and Nomad Sculpt.
Where do you start when sculpting a head?
Start with a sphere and the cranium, not the face. Sculpt the skull mass, the jaw, and the neck as one continuous form before you touch an eye or a nose. Re:Form opens on a sphere with Symmetry X available, which is exactly the right starting point — every classical head-construction method builds from a ball for the same reason.
That order isn't a stylistic preference. The face is a thin layer of features sitting on a much larger bone shape, and if the bone shape is wrong, no amount of nose sculpting rescues it. Beginners invert this constantly — forty minutes into an eyelid before noticing the cranium is a beach ball.
The proportion landmarks worth memorizing
Andrew Loomis's "divided ball and plane" construction — from Drawing the Head and Hands (Viking Press, 1956) — remains the standard scaffold taught for head construction, and it transfers directly to 3D: same forms, vertices instead of lines. The landmarks, in the order you'll place them:

Two of those surprise people every time. The eyes sit near the vertical middle of the head — almost everyone places them too high, because we mentally crop off the cranium. And the ears sit far enough back that a head with ears at the midline reads as a cartoon before you've done anything else.
The second reference worth knowing is the Asaro head — John Asaro's planar simplification of the face, sold as a mannequin since 1976 (per Asaro's own site). It flattens the face into hard-edged planes so you can see where light breaks across it. You don't need to own one; even a photo teaches you that a face is planes meeting at edges rather than a smooth blob, which is the most useful correction there is to a beginner sculpt.
Set up before you sculpt
Five minutes of setup saves an hour of correction.
Load reference in orthographic. In Re:Form's Ortho projection you can load a separate image for each of the six axis views, and front plus side is the pair that matters for a head. These are world-space planes, not screen overlays, so they hold position while you orbit. Set opacity low enough that you can still read your own silhouette.
Turn on Symmetry X. A head is the canonical symmetric subject, and matching two hand-sculpted sides is a separate skill from sculpting a good one. Leave it on until the finishing pass.
Learn the view keys. 1, 3, and 7 jump to the primary axis views (Shift for the opposite side), 5 toggles projection, and F frames the model and fits the zoom. Front and side should be a keypress, because you'll check them every couple of minutes.
Stay in Ortho while you block. Perspective distorts proportion at close range — the nose reads longer, the ears smaller — and that's exactly the error you can't see while you're causing it. Switch to Perspective at the end to check the head as an eye would actually see it.
How do you block out the skull?
Block the skull with Grab and Clay at the lowest resolution, working only on masses: cranium, brow ridge, cheekbones, jaw, neck. Use Grab to pull the shape, Clay to build volume, and Shift-drag to smooth. In Re:Form, Grab is the proportion tool and Clay is the mass tool — the whole blocking stage runs on those two plus Smooth.
Do the moves in this order:
- Squash the sphere. A skull isn't a ball — it's longer front-to-back than wide. Grab it into an egg before anything else.
- Flatten the sides. The temples and the plane above the ears are genuinely flat. One Scrape or Flatten pass stops the head reading as a balloon.
- Pull the jaw down and forward. Big brush, low subdivision. The jaw is the second-largest mass in the head and beginners under-build it every time.
- Cut the brow line. Clay a ridge across where the cross-line sits. This one stroke is what makes a lump start reading as a face.
- Set the eye sockets. Not eyes — sockets. Two broad dents under the brow, with Grab or an inverted Clay stroke.
- Add the neck. Grab a cylinder of mass down from the skull base. Necks are thicker than people expect, and they attach forward of the back of the skull, not under it.
- Remesh. Heavy Grab moves stretch triangles long and thin, and brushes misbehave on stretched geometry. Remesh rebuilds even topology over the same shape — the remeshing explainer covers when that's the right fix.
Now squint at it until detail blurs and only the silhouette survives. Does it read as a head from the front, the side, and the three-quarter? If any answer is no, keep blocking.
The features, in the order that works
Features go in from largest to smallest and from most-structural to most-decorative. Each one is easier if the one before it is already right.
Nose
The nose is a wedge with a ball on the end and two wings. Block the wedge with Clay from the brow down — the nose starts at the brow, not at the eye line, which is why beginner noses look pasted on. Then the ball of the tip, then the nostril wings, with Crease defining the wing seams last. Check the side view constantly: nose length and projection are proportion errors, not detail errors, and they get expensive to fix later.
Eyes
Sculpt the eyeball as a rounded mass filling the socket before you sculpt a single lid. Lids are thin sheets that wrap a sphere; if there's no sphere, the lids have nothing to wrap and you get the flat, dead-eyed look that plagues first sculpts. Once the ball is in, Crease the lid seams and Clay the lid thickness over them. The upper lid overhangs the lower — that overhang is most of what reads as "alive."
Mouth
The mouth wraps a cylinder. The whole muzzle area sits on a barrel-shaped surface following the arc of the teeth, and lips sculpted flat across the face are the second-most-common beginner tell after high eyes. Build the barrel with Clay, Crease the lip line into it, then Draw the lip volumes on top. That lip line is one continuous curve, not two separate lips meeting.
Ears
Ears go last, and they're their own project. Block a flat, angled paddle at the right size in the right place — that alone reads correctly at conversation distance. Then Crease the rim and dent the bowl. Nobody will fault your ear anatomy; everyone notices an ear in the wrong place.
Between each of these, hold Shift to smooth and keep orbiting. A face that's right from the front and wrong from three-quarters is wrong. Every brush named here is broken down in the brush guide.
Should eyes be part of the head or separate objects?
Either works, and separate spheres are easier for beginners. In Re:Form, a new sculpt layer starts from a primitive you choose, so you can drop a sphere into a socket, scale it, and mirror it to the other side. Separate eyeballs keep a clean round shape that lids can wrap, and they can be moved after the fact without re-sculpting the face.
The trade-off is a multi-part model, which matters at export: a 3D printer usually wants everything merged into one watertight mesh (Merge down and Merge all, in the Layers panel), while a render or portfolio image is happy with separate parts. Sculpting the eyeball directly into the head is the more advanced route — it's what a clay sculptor does and it gives better lid transitions, but it punishes mistakes, because there's no separate object left to nudge.
When to subdivide
Subdivide only when the current mesh physically can't hold the shape you're trying to make. That's the whole rule. Each level quadruples the triangle count and makes big-form iteration slower, so stay low as long as you can. A practical ladder for a head:
- Base level: skull mass, jaw, neck, brow, sockets. Nothing else.
- +1: nose wedge, muzzle barrel, eyeball masses, ear paddles, cheekbone transitions.
- +2: lid seams, lip line, nostril wings, ear rim and bowl.
- +3 and up: skin surface, fine creases, pores, anything you'd only see in a close-up render.
Re:Form's Subdivide ↓ steps back down a level, and dropping back down to fix a proportion is normal practice, not a failure. Fix the big form low, come back up, and the detail comes with you.
The Free plan runs to roughly 12.5 million triangles, which is far past what a head study needs — level 3 or 4 on a typical starting mesh will hold skin texture. Hitting the ceiling only stops further subdivision; every brush, layer, and tool keeps working on the mesh you have, and nothing gets watermarked.
How do you tell what's wrong with your own head sculpt?
Flip it. Every experienced sculptor uses mirroring and re-framing to break the blindness that sets in after an hour on one view. In Re:Form, the Flip H toggle on your reference view, the six one-key axis views, and orbiting to an unfamiliar three-quarter angle all do the same job — they show you the sculpt as a stranger sees it.
A checklist that catches most beginner errors:
- Are the eyes too high? They almost always are. Measure crown to chin and check the eye line is near the middle.
- Is the cranium too small? The brain case is bigger than it feels. From the side, the skull behind the ear is a substantial mass.
- Does the profile silhouette work? References off, side view, pure shape: forehead → brow → nose → lip → chin → throat. That line is where likeness lives.
- Is the jaw doing anything? A jaw that just curves off the cheek reads as a soft doll. There should be a corner where the jaw angle turns up toward the ear.
- Are the planes reading? Squint. A smooth gradient with no plane changes means the sculpt is under-built — this is what the Asaro model teaches.
Finishing: asymmetry, surface, export
Turn Symmetry X off for the last pass. Real heads are asymmetric — one eye slightly higher, a nose that leans, a jaw that isn't quite square — and half a millimeter of deliberate asymmetry is the difference between a face and a mannequin. Keep it subtle: this is a seasoning stage, not a rebuild.
Then surface. Skin isn't smooth; it's a soft surface with fine irregularity. A light Noise pass at low strength across the forehead and cheeks, plus Rake along the brow and jaw for direction, kills the injection-molded look faster than any amount of extra sculpting. Mask the eyes and lips first so the texture pass can't smear the work you're proudest of.
Save as you go. Re:Form autosaves to your browser and writes native .clay files to your own machine, snapshotting the mesh, every layer, and your reference setup. The mesh lives on your GPU while you work, and saves land on your disk.

Nothing, on the Free plan. Every brush, sculpt layers, masking, symmetry, remeshing, and reference images are free, up to roughly 12.5 million triangles, with OBJ import and export, local .clay saves, no watermark and no card — for personal, non-commercial work. You do need a free sign-in, and Re:Form is desktop-only.
Pro is $9.99 a month or $99 a year: the triangle budget rises to 50 million, STL, GLB, and FBX import and export are added, and a commercial license lets you sell what you make. The caveat, as always: Re:Form is v0.6.7 Alpha, and it does the sculpting step only — no retopology, no UVs, no rigging, no texture painting beyond vertex color. FAQ
How long does it take to sculpt a decent head?
Budget three to five hours for a first head you're not embarrassed by, spread over two or three sittings rather than one marathon. Blocking the skull takes about thirty minutes; the features take the bulk of the time; the finishing pass takes another hour. Your fifth head will take half as long as your first, because most of the time goes to correcting proportion errors you'll stop making.
Do I need anatomy knowledge to sculpt a head?
Not to start. The Loomis landmarks above will carry you through your first several heads without knowing a single muscle name. Anatomy starts paying off when you want expression, age, or likeness — those come from the skull underneath and the muscles over it. A skull study is the highest-value next step, and it's a better use of a weekend than another face.
Can I sculpt a head with just a mouse?
Yes. Nothing in this workflow needs pressure sensitivity — blocking with Grab, building with Clay, Shift to smooth, and masking all work identically with a mouse. A pen gives finer control on the surface pass, which is the last stage and the least critical for a first head.
