Re:Form 0.8.4 Alpha is about starting a model. The headline is Blockout: instead of pushing a sphere around until it looks like something, you draw the rough form in strokes of volume, adjust them as curves, and press Finish to turn them into one mesh ready to sculpt. Around it sit a reworked Carve, smoother Rake and Fissure 02 strokes, an opposite for Fill, and a round of fixes from the first testing sessions.
What version is Re:Form on now?
Re:Form is on v0.8.4 Alpha as of September 26, 2026. It adds the Blockout tool, a Carve brush that cuts one sharp groove along the stroke, Rake and Carve strokes that flow around curves, a smoother Fissure 02, Ctrl on Fill to shave bumps down, brush alphas that belong to one brush, gizmo symmetry on a single layer, and fixes for dialogs, undo, alpha stamps and timelapse recording.

Blockout: draw the rough form
Click Blockout on the tool rail and Re:Form adds a Blockout layer and swaps the brush settings for the Blockout panel. Drag to lay a stroke: tubes, bars, planks and strands that melt into each other where they meet. Started on a surface, a stroke rests on it; started in the air, it takes the depth of the curve nearest to it on screen. Ctrl+drag carves, Alt+drag lays a straight stroke, and symmetry mirrors everything you draw.
Every stroke stays a curve through a few control points until you press Finish:
- Hold Shift to see every curve's centre line. Shift+click selects a curve or picks a single point, and Shift+drag draws a selection box.
- The transform gizmo moves, rotates and scales the selection, or only the picked points.
- Shift+right-click adds a point, and Delete removes the picked points, or the whole curve when none are picked.
- Draw a stroke's end onto the end of another curve and the two join into one; a ring on the end shows the join before you let go. A stroke drawn over another curve rests on top of it.
The shape settings cover most first passes at a character or a prop. There are round, square, triangle, hexagon and plank profiles, plus the shape of any alpha from the library. Ends can be domed or cut square. Taper start, Taper end and Taper amount narrow a stroke to a fine tip, for hair, horns and claws. Stabilize steadies long curves with a lazy string, and a dashed line shows the string while you draw. Presets set everything at once: Tube, Blob, Bar, Plank, Ridge, Fine line and Strand, plus your own.
While you work the preview is built at a light resolution so drawing stays quick. Pause for a moment and a refined preview, built the way Finish builds it, takes its place. Finish builds the mesh at the Final resolution, with a Smoothing setting for how much the surface is rounded off. On the test machine a 40-stroke mirrored blockout finishes in about eight and a half seconds.
Unfinished strokes are saved with the project, so a blockout can be closed halfway and picked up again. If you pick a sculpt or paint brush with strokes still unfinished, Re:Form asks whether to Finish first. The Blockout guide walks through every control.
Carve, Rake, Fill and Fissure 02
- Carve cuts one sharp groove. It is now the Rake with a single tooth: a clean groove a little over half the brush ring wide that follows your stroke. Ctrl raises a sharp ridge instead.
- Rake and Carve flow around curves. Their teeth follow a smoothed direction of your stroke instead of the pointer's small jitters, so grooves no longer kink, and a stroke no longer starts with a short mark across it.
- Fill has an opposite. Hold Ctrl, or turn on Invert, and Fill shaves the bumps down to the surrounding surface while leaving the valleys alone.
- Fissure 02 is smooth. Its wander now moves the crack sideways only and eases in from the first dab, and its dabs sit closer together, so the walls of the crack are smooth instead of jagged.
Fixes from testing
- A question can never get stuck behind the "please wait" shield. Delete masked, Split masked, Split Mesh Sets, Split loose, Merge visible and Merge down now ask before the work starts, and any confirm dialog lifts the shield while it is open.
- Ctrl+Z ignores key auto-repeat, so a held key undoes one step instead of jumping far back.
- Gizmo symmetry on one layer. Unlock the origin, move the pivot to one side and lock it, and a gizmo drag mirrors across every active plane the pivot is off. Move, rotate and scale all mirror on X, Y and Z, and one Undo puts it all back.
- Releasing Shift mid-stroke switches the rest of the stroke to Relax, which evens the mesh without shrinking it. Smooth's default Strength is 0.5.
- Brush alphas belong to the brush that loaded them. Load an alpha on Draw and Smooth has none; switch back and it is there again with its adjustments.
- Alpha stamps at grazing angles no longer spike near a silhouette, and Ortho views get a real stroke direction.
- Rake no longer drifts off the model in long straight streaks.
- Timelapse recording never captures in the middle of a stroke, so recording no longer stalls sculpting.
- Mesh Sets: Set Mask and Set Hide are joined by Set Delete, which cuts a set out of the layer with one click, and Split Mesh Sets keeps each piece's set.
- The cursor's inner ring reads the whole Falloff range, axes are on by default, and the brush picker's Lines group is called Sharp.
- Themes: Lemonade Lake is a lime-green chrome under a lemon-yellow accent, and Mint a slate blue-teal chrome under a pale mint accent.
Is Re:Form 0.8.4 stable enough for real work?
Re:Form 0.8.4 is still alpha software. For this release, all 80 automated tests passed, including new ones for Blockout's drawing, selection, joining and Finish, the Carve and Rake stroke direction, and Fill's opposite. Features still change quickly, and a project that matters should be saved as a .clay file as well as in the cloud.
Every tool, Blockout included, is on the Free plan, up to about 12.5 million triangles. Pro plans raise the triangle budget, remove the share limit and add STL, GLB and FBX export and a commercial licence.
What is still rough
- Blockout carves cut blockout strokes only. A Ctrl stroke cuts into the strokes around it, not into your other layers. After Finish, the sculpt brushes and Clip do that.
- Carve at a large size on a tight curve shows the straight edges of its tooth. At working sizes it follows the curve cleanly.
- Fissure 01 can show fine ribs along its walls at large brush sizes, where its dabs sit farther apart than the cut can hide.
FAQ
What is Blockout in Re:Form?
Blockout is a tool for roughing out a form fast. You draw strokes of volume that melt together, edit them as curves, and press Finish to turn them into one mesh on its own layer, ready to subdivide and sculpt.
Can I edit a Blockout stroke after drawing it?
Yes. Until you press Finish, every stroke is a curve: hold Shift to see and select it, then move, rotate or scale it or its points with the gizmo, change its size, profile or taper, add points or delete them. Ctrl+Z undoes any of it.
Is Blockout on the Free plan?
Yes. Blockout is on every plan, including Free.
Do older Re:Form projects open in 0.8.4?
Yes. Projects saved before 0.8.4 open normally. A project saved with unfinished Blockout strokes needs 0.8.4 or later to bring those strokes back.
