Re:Form remembers how a sculpt was made. Every stroke and every operation is kept as a step, and the History slider in the bar at the bottom of the studio moves back and forward through them. It is always on: there is nothing to switch on and nothing to set.

History is not Undo. Undo (Ctrl+Z) takes back your last few steps one at a time. History reaches back through the whole session and lets you look without changing anything.

Looking back

  • Drag the slider to the left and let go. The sculpt is rebuilt as it was at that step; a card counts the steps while it works. The readout beside the slider says where you are, for example 12 of 40.
  • Drag it back to the right-hand end, which reads Now, and you are back in your sculpt exactly as you left it.

Looking changes nothing. While an earlier point is on screen, File ▸ Save, the autosaves and File ▸ Download project file still save your sculpt as it is at Now, not the point you are looking at. Undo and Redo wait until you are back at Now.

Carrying on from an earlier point

Sculpt, or make any other edit, while an earlier point is on screen and Re:Form asks one question:

Keep the later work as a separate version?

  • Yes saves everything that came after that point as its own project, named after yours with "(later version)" at the end. If you are not signed in, or your plan has no room for another project, it is downloaded to your computer as a project file instead.
  • No lets the later work go.

Either way you carry on from the point you chose, and the history goes on from there. With a brush, the press that raises the question does not sculpt; your next press does.

What is kept, and where

  • Strokes are kept as the brush dabs themselves, so a step is rebuilt exactly: same brush, same strength, same symmetry.
  • Operations that rebuild the mesh (Remesh, Reflow, Decimate, a Clip cut, merging layers, importing a mesh, finishing a Blockout) are kept as a copy of the project after them.
  • The history is saved beside your project in your account, in its own file, on every Save and autosave. It is never inside the project file, so projects stay the size they are and open as fast as they do.
  • The history has its own size limit: half your plan's project size. Past it, the history starts again from the sculpt as it is at that moment. Nothing is shown and nothing stops; your sculpt is not affected, only how far back History can reach.
  • A project saved before History existed starts its history the first time you open it.

Good to know

  • Coming back to Now clears Undo: the steps before you looked back can no longer be undone one by one. Use History to reach them instead.
  • To make scrubbing quick, Re:Form keeps copies of the sculpt at intervals in your browser's own storage. They are only a cache: if the browser clears them, they are made again the next time you scrub.
  • History needs the GPU engine. On the CPU engine the slider stays empty.
